Cameras: To Future Proof Or No?

Three years ago, I sold all my cameras: My Sony DSC-T1, Canon Powershot A640, Nikon P300, my dad’s Sony DCR-PC1 and lastly my DSLR Canon 450D. I thought of selling the last one for a long time, and came to the conclusion that I have to sell it because it’s so outdated. The screen doesn’t flip, and it doesn’t have any video functionality. In 2015, all DSLRs have video functionality and at the time since I go to a lot of concerts (RIP to that time) it was a burden having to carry two cameras, one for shooting photos and the other for taking photos. Time to let that camera go, and perhaps my concert photography days to go along with that. 😆

Saying good bye to my concert-going years was the hardest part. 🙁

Anyhoo, so in first couple months of 2015, when I was still able to go out and about myself to malls and “living the life” normally, I came by Camerahaus and saw they have a promo for the Canon M3. The price I saw for their camera kit seemed normal for me. I think it was around Php 25,000 (or was it Php 27,000) for the body + 18-55mm lens. Good thing I brought my card with me, and next thing that happened is history. Hahaha! I was cameraless at the time, so that was the perfect time.

…or so I thought.

I was happy I have a decent mirrorless camera and I can shoot photos now, plus video! Until November came and I had to be put into Dialysis. :roll: Things came an end for me. No more living normally, always had to go to hospital, then my skull had to be cut to get a blood clot off, seizures, etc. I still have this fear of having seizures, every day. Also that dying feeling during Dialysis.

Good bye concerts, living normally, commuting, going out by myself (no posse), and the worst: EATING THE FOOD I LOVE. Oh my god, I love going to countries and eating food I’d only get to eat there.. ugh. Those were the days!

Back to my camera’s story: The next cameras that were released by Canon in the next three years after 2015 had bells and whistles. There’s a camera, not the interchangeable type of camera that I’d like, with pretty good features.. except this isn’t mirrorless or preferable with the setup I have then. This is the Canon G7 X Mark II. Thought that’s be a waste if I bought that because the lens I have won’t work with it. The aperture it has is f1.8, that’d be a promising “pro” from the pros and cons while you are deciding if you should buy it. But still, it’s a digital camera, not mirrorless. For a while, it is a convincing to-buy, but naaah.

If only buying is the same as getting them for free, huh? =)) Oh how I envy those newbie vloggers and so much thank yous to their followers from those “like my video if you enjoyed it!”.

What happened to the two guys, Kai and Lok, who does the episodes in DigitalRev? I think they’re better but.. maybe I’ll get used to him. I don’t even know his name? But that accent is.. ;;) Oh wait, the two left DigitalRev and made their own channels. I feel bad for Lok having to start from scratch, he’s like a sad lil puppy on his first video.

Next, the Canon EOS M6. I guess this is the camera that’s suppose to follow up to my M3. What sucks in this camera, from my research, is the screen flips up but you can’t put your mic on top when you do because it’ll block the screen. Also no EVF.

I don’t remember much from the technical specs other than those I’ve mentioned. Maybe one camera has better shooting features other than P, A, S, M and video shooting features.

And today, while looking around one more time. Just casually looking around Facebook, here comes Canon’s latest ad promoting their newest mirrorless, the Canon M50. I thought this is an old camera model. I looked at the comments and people kept asking how much it costs. Canon Philippines replied it’s around Php 35-45k. Hmm, maybe it could get lower when a new camera is released. :))

What I like about it: Articulated screen, WITH A VIEWFINDER, and still pocketable. The 4k with no focus is a hassle and keeping me turned off from wanting it. (Wanting, not buying.. I don’t have the money for it.)

As a vlogger, having an inaudible sound of your voice, video that moves too much are such big no-nos! AKA pissing off and turning your followers/watchers away. I can’t even put my arms up high to hold a camera on its monopod now. I’m too tired all the time from Dialysis.

I don’t want to be a vlogger, even a popular one, because you have to have that responsibility of having to upload a video every week.. such a hassle. I can’t even manage to reupload and rename all the photos I’ve posted here and I’m sorry about that if you are here to see my previous posts about concerts.

The Canon M50 looks more or less of a game changer BUT it has again, cons: 720p 4k resolution, no Dual Pixel AF in that resolution. Ugh, WTF Canon. Back to waiting for their next release, I guess? But by then I would have forgotten about it and writing about this. I really do not want to be this invested in cameras again.

Yeah, since I don’t want to waste money having to keep buying to suit my needs.. I’d like to future proof my camera. It’s also hard to keep selling used cameras too.

I’m noticing that these brands are taking off the most wanted features in a camera and putting them one by one in their next releases so people will keep buying them. >:(

What I want in a future proof mirrorless camera:

  1. Articulated screen;
  2. Viewfinder;
  3. Touchscreen;
  4. Focusing capabilities;
  5. No cropping of both video and photos. If I bought an 11-22mm lens, it should show photos with that measurement;
  6. Can put a third party mic and won’t have it block the screen, the mic in these cameras suck;
  7. At least 1080p video with AF, same with 4k (since we are talking about future proofing, right?);
  8. Can put lens from EOS and EOS-M line;
  9. Pocketable.

Call me, Canon, when you release this camera in an affordable price range.

Ok thank you, bye.
